Philadelphia native and former International Boxing
Federation Cruiserweight Champion, Steve “USS” Cunningham, will get his shot to
claim the world title once again.
The negotiation process has begun with Matt “Too Smooth” Godfrey to put
the unclaimed title on the line in what will certainly be a true test of
ability. The man with an incredible 82” reach welcomes the opportunity to take
down anyone who stands in the way of regaining the title, most recently held by
Tomasz Adamek who relinquished the title by moving to heavyweight class.
As a 19 year old amateur fighter in the Navy, Steve
Cunningham could only dream of being the world’s #1. The intensity and determination was there from the first
time he strapped on the gloves and he quickly moved up the ranks. He decided in 2000 to turn pro and
hasn’t looked back. Five short
years later, “USS” defeated Kevin Davis for the title he had worked so hard for
- the IBF’s #1 ranked fighter.
Cunningham is not only one of the most feared fighters in
the sport of boxing, he’s one of the most well respected. He’s known for letting his performance
in the ring do the talking rather than verbally cutting down his
opponents. More importantly, he’s
looked up to by his community and all of those around him. Steve has spent many of his days
outside of training speaking with children on the importance of living a
healthy lifestyle through FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) and several
other organizations. In his
hometown of Philadelphia, he recently had the chance to speak with teenagers at
a camp to fight obesity, emphasizing a need for balance in a person’s life.
This is something Cunningham not only preaches but practices as it plays a
major role in his continuous development as a boxer and definitely puts him at
an advantage in the upcoming title bout.
Matt Godfrey, (20-1-0) comes in looking to take advantage of
the opportunity to prove his worth near the top of the IBF rankings. Cunningham however, has the experience
and size to keep Godfrey on his heels by putting his career 22-2-0 record on
the line with his second title in sight.
Godfrey did recently defeat Michael Simms, age 35, to improve his record
and ranking to its current status, although it was just over a year and a half
ago that he dropped his first fight to Rudolf Kraj of Germany, which may still
be negatively affecting his confidence.
Be watching as a date and time is expected to be released in
the near future as Steve “USS” Cunningham looks to make good on his “two-time
in ‘09” campaign.
